What actually pushes a homeowner to call
Most calls start with one of a handful of things: privacy from a new neighbor's window, keeping the dog in the yard without blocking the light, a boundary that needs to be settled before it becomes a dispute, curb appeal on a house going on the market, or a pool code that requires a fence at all. The signs that a fence is due are usually visible from the street before anyone picks up the phone: a post leaning enough to rack the gate, a chain link top rail bowed from a fallen limb, rust starting at an ornamental iron weld, or cedar pickets gone silver and splitting at the cap rail. Cedar privacy fencing
Board-on-board cedar is still what most Pasadena homeowners ask for first. It closes the sightline completely, holds up better than a stockade run because the overlap keeps gaps from opening as the boards move with the weather, and it takes a stain if the owner wants to change the color later.
We build the posts and rails for what cedar actually does in this climate: swell and shrink with the humidity. A cap rail and a treated base board keep the bottom of the panel out of standing water, which is where a cedar fence usually starts to rot first.
Chapter 03
Chain link and ornamental iron
Chain link is the right call when the job is containment rather than privacy, a side yard, a dog run, or a pool enclosure that has to meet code without blocking the light. Galvanized mesh set on a top rail sized for the span holds its tension for years instead of sagging into a curve by the second summer.
Ornamental iron does the opposite job. It marks a front yard boundary without hiding the house behind it, and it holds up well on brick columns and long street-facing runs where curb appeal is the point. Powder-coated black steel is the finish most homeowners land on here.
Custom wood gates and walk gates get built to the same standard as the fence line itself, hung on posts set deep enough that the gate still swings square after a wet winter.

Pasadena sits on heavy clay that swells when it's wet and shrinks hard through a dry August, and that movement is what knocks a fence out of square faster than the wind does. Footings get sized and poured to hold in this soil specifically, not to a generic depth chart pulled from somewhere drier.
